  • School Categorisation

    Fri 30 Jan 2015

As you may be aware, all schools in Wales have been given a colour categorisation. There are four categories green, yellow, amber and red.

We have been awarded a yellow category, which means that we have been identified as an effective school that knows what it needs to do to improve even further.

Schools are judged on their standards and their capacity to improve. The standards section is informed by the attainment pupils reach in year 2 and year 6 and includes pupils with additional learning needs.

I have included below the guide the Welsh Government has produced to help parents and carers understand this system.

If you would like any further information, please contact the school

  • New Report Format

    Mon 26 Jan 2015

    Dear Parents,

Following the feedback we received from you in the parents’ questionnaire, we have been looking at ways to improve our communication, allowing you to have as much information about your child and the school as possible.

    So far we have;

    • Updated our newsletters
    • Created a new website which holds much more information about the curriculum and ways you can help
    • Ensured consistency across classes and year groups with weekly learning letters for each class in the Foundation Phase (termly in KS2)
    • Trialled the messaging service through Class Dojo in Year 6
    • Held more parents’ information meetings e.g. Big Maths

I hope that you have found all of these improvements helpful. We are now looking at the way we share information about exactly how your child is doing and the progress they are making.  We want you to know what level your child is working towards and have a clear understanding of how you can help them further. We currently have two formal parent consultations per year, where each class teacher talks about how your child is performing in school. We also have a written report at the end of the year.  In addition to this, we want to increase the written information you have on your child. We are wanting to introduce reports on a termly basis so you feel you have a clearer idea of the progress your child is making throughout the year.

    Suggested Proposal:

    Autumn term

    Spring term

    Summer term

    Parents Evening

    Parents Evening

Initial Report issued to all pupils in October. This will have information on your child’s present level, the target we have set them to achieve by the end of the year and the average level for that aged child.

Interim Report. This will give you a mid-year progress report. It will let you know whether your child is “on track” to meet their target.

The End of Term Report will report on all subjects. It will also give you more information on your child’s attitude, behaviour and effort.

We hope that by issuing three reports, rather than one, you will have a much clearer idea of how well your child is doing at key points throughout the year. I have attached a DRAFT of each report for reference. We welcome any feedback you may have on this proposed change. Please contact the school office if you have any questions or would like to have further information. We will also be holding a parents meeting, where you will be able to ask any questions / give your ideas and suggestions. This will be on Tuesday January 27th in the hall at 3:40pm. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Many thanks for your on-going support.

  • PPS football team meet Chris Coleman!

Tue 20 Jan 2015 Mr Raymond
On Friday, the PPS football team travelled to Penybont Fc to take part in a tournament involving several Bridgend schools. After winning 5 of their 7 games, the boys then had the pleasure of meeting Wales football manager Chris Coleman who posed for photos and signed autographs!
  • PPS Football team win the Cardiff City FC Cup

    Wed 14 Jan 2015

Pencoed Primary School's Football team had a great day at the Cardiff City FC Kids Cup on Tuesday 13th January.

After seven matches they were crowned group winners and have progressed to the next round on Thursday 29th January 2015.

The team played against schools from Cwmbran, Cardiff, RCT and the Vale of Glamorgan and scored lots of fantastic goals.  Captain Luis Barham-Young scored the most memorable goal which crashed against the cross bar from 20 metres out.  It really was a superb goal which would be better suited to ‘Match of the Day’.

There was lots of tension at the end of the tournament because Pencoed had to wait for confirmation of their win.  They and Ysgol Y Wern (Cardiff) were level on 16 points but Pencoed won the group with a much higher goal difference.

Well done to the boys and good luck in the next round.

    Squad

Luis Barham-Young, Rhys Jones, Llyw Gibbons, Ethan Sutton, Harri Pascoe, Joshua Davies (all Y6), Sam Rowlands (Y5) and Eduardo Bregua (Y4).

  • Thanks from the Community

    Fri 09 Jan 2015

We have had the following thank you letter from Simon Bugler, manager of NatWest Bank Pencoed, who attended our Community Coffee Afternoon in December.

“The invitation delivered by Julie Jenkins and two pupils said, “Please come along to our Community Christmas Coffee Afternoon where you can enjoy some of our preparations for Christmas”.

So it was with excited anticipation that I went along not quite knowing what to expect. The next hour was a most enjoyable and impressive affair as Pencoed Primary School welcomed the close community of Pencoed and the young pupils showed just what future talent the town has to offer. From Christmas carols to the School Council talking about their important job giving the pupils a voice and pupils reciting poems about their favourite teacher which brought a tear to the eye-it was a fantastic insight to the great talent and the way the pupils are truly involved in all aspeacts of the school. Roll on December 2015!
