ECO News
Spring Term 2015
We have completed some of our targets on our action plan which we will share with you. If you have any ideas or related issues then please see one of the ECO Committee. We have displayed ‘Do Not Drop Litter’ signs, carried out a litter survey and a litter pick. We have created and placed stickers on the light switches to tell you what lights you can put on. We are also doing the ‘Golden Light Bulb Award’ and we will collect them on a Friday.
We will need extra help to fill the planters with soil and dig the garden over in front of the Year 5 classes. If you can help see Mr Lambert.
‘Fairtrade Fortnight’ starts on February 23rd. There will be a Fairtrade shop in the hall. Big Pedal starts for all KS2 pupils on Monday 2nd March. On Tuesday March 3rd we will be assessed for our ECO Platinum Award.
I am pleased to announce that we will be opening an after school club for the pupils of Pencoed Primary School. It will be run by “Simply Out of School” an organisation that already successfully runs clubs in other local schools. It will be open to all pupils from aged 3-11 and will offer after school care until 5:30pm. It will be hosted at the main site at the school.
Please see attached flyer for more details or pop into the school office.
Regards
Suzanne Sarjeant
As part of our provision for More Able and Talented pupils, we issue a selection of children a "Stretch Yourself" challenge book. This book gives these pupils half-termly opportunities to complete independent enrichment projects on a wide range of topics. Some examples of these projects have been to:
Design and budget a roller coaster.
Design a Dream School.
Write a fact file on an unusual animal.
Write a profile on a person that has inspired them.

As you may be aware, all schools in Wales have been given a colour categorisation. There are four categories green, yellow, amber and red.
We have been awarded a yellow category, which means that we have been identified as an effective school that knows what it needs to do to improve even further.
Schools are judged on their standards and their capacity to improve. The standards section is informed by the attainment pupils reach in year 2 and year 6 and includes pupils with additional learning needs.
I have included below the guide the Welsh Government has produced to help parents and carers understand this system.
If you would like any further information, please contact the schoolOn Friday afternoon, Oldcastle Primary were the visitors for the latest round of rugby fixtures. Both the "A" and "B" team games were played in excellent spirit with both victories going to Pencoed Primary School!

Dear Parents,
Following the feedback we received from you in the parents’ questionnaire, we have been looking at ways to improve our communication, allowing you to have as much information about your child and the school as possible.
So far we have;
I hope that you have found all of these improvements helpful. We are now looking at the way we share information about exactly how your child is doing and the progress they are making. We want you to know what level your child is working towards and have a clear understanding of how you can help them further. We currently have two formal parent consultations per year, where each class teacher talks about how your child is performing in school. We also have a written report at the end of the year. In addition to this, we want to increase the written information you have on your child. We are wanting to introduce reports on a termly basis so you feel you have a clearer idea of the progress your child is making throughout the year.
Suggested Proposal:
|
Autumn term |
Spring term |
Summer term |

Parents Evening |

Initial Report issued to all pupils in October. This will have information on your child’s present level, the target we have set them to achieve by the end of the year and the average level for that aged child. |
Interim Report. This will give you a mid-year progress report. It will let you know whether your child is “on track” to meet their target. |
The End of Term Report will report on all subjects. It will also give you more information on your child’s attitude, behaviour and effort. |
We hope that by issuing three reports, rather than one, you will have a much clearer idea of how well your child is doing at key points throughout the year. I have attached a DRAFT of each report for reference. We welcome any feedback you may have on this proposed change. Please contact the school office if you have any questions or would like to have further information. We will also be holding a parents meeting, where you will be able to ask any questions / give your ideas and suggestions. This will be on Tuesday January 27th in the hall at 3:40pm. Tea and coffee will be provided.
Many thanks for your on-going support.
